Expanded Tour Offerings Explore the Life of a Plantation at Chatham
Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

During the summer season, the National Park Service is offering weekend tours at Chatham—a 1771 plantation on Stafford Heights, overlooking the Rappahannock River and Fredericksburg. Visitors are invited to join a park ranger for “Life of a Plantation: War, Freedom and Change,” a free guided tour offered every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am and/or 2:00 pm. Please call the information desk at Chatham (540-693-3200 ext1030) to confirm tour times.
Chatham witnessed tumultuous and even violent transformations over the course of two centuries, and scars of the past still remain on the landscape. This 45-minute guided walk of the gardens and grounds at Chatham helps participants understand the site in the wider context of American history. Historians use personal stories of those who lived at Chatham, both enslaved and free, to explore topics like the Civil War, the search for freedom, life on the plantation, and more.
Chatham has enjoyed a rising number of visitors, with more than a 30% increase in the last five years. This formal program offers new and returning guests a new way to explore and enjoy this site.
